Stygian refers to the river Styx of Hades’ Underworld in Greek mythology and its dark and gloomy nature. Personally, I love Greek mythology and felt inspired to create a piece that I felt could translate to what Stygian, and Greek mythology in general, means to me. In a Greek mythology, roses were heavily associated with death, as such it felt natural to use them in dark and heavy colours to reflect my Hellish vision, as well as the darker green colours of moss and flowering to pop the natural white of the fox skull. Foxes were seen as to represent fear in Greek mythology, Ancient Greeks feared death and potential eternal damnation under Hades rule more than most anything. And what about the gorgeous specimen? Well one of my favourite myths is that of Arachne and I had to incorporate her story in this piece of being transformed into the worlds’ first spider. Whilst roses did represent death in Greek mythology, they also represented rebirth, which is what I wanted to display in this piece with both the Turantula and Fox being reborn into a beautiful piece of art.
